National airline of Fiji was established by Australian Harold Gatty as Katafaga Estates Ltd and started operations in 1951 as Fiji Airways. In its early years airline used Dragon Rapides and De Havilland Herons on domestic network. In 1971 airline changed its name to Air Pacific and acquired its first jet, a BAC 111. This enabled Air Pacific to start service to New Zealand (1974) and Australia (1975).
Airline focuses on International service. Domestic carrier Sun Air was acquired in 2007 and renamed Pacific Sun Airlines.
Air Pacific is owned by Government of Fiji which holds majority stake, QANTAS and rest is owned by neighboring Pacific island nations.
Air Pacific started long-haul service to Hawaii in 1983 using DC-10 widebody.
In 1999 Air Pacific receives its first Boeing 737-800. Is rebranding to its original name of Fiji Airways during 2013.
On 27 June 2013, Air Pacific made an official name change to Fiji Airways.
Subsidiary Fiji Link created 2014 for feeder services.
