note
Scheduled passenger low cost domestic and international operator. Airline was founded by ex-Texas International executives Don Burr and Garry Gitner. Airline commenced service April 30 1981 with flights from Newark to Buffalo, Columbus and Norfolk. International flights commenced May 26 1983 with a 747 service from Newark to Gatwick. In 1986, Denver based Frontier Airlines was purchased, which meant new hub for People Express and significant growth. Rapid expansion, purchasing and inability to successfully integrate Frontier Airlines led to financial trouble that forced airline to abandon its low cost no frills strategy. Airline eventually could not keep its creditors off and had to file for bankruptcy. Texas Air bought out People Express and integrated its operations into Continental Airlines - its subsidiary Frontier Airlines was also purchased by Texas Air, but in separate transaction.
