National airline of Jordan was founded by royal Decree of King Hussein and commenced operations in December 1963 using Douglas DC-7 aircraft and Handly-Page Heralds. Aircraft were transferred from Jordan Airways which shut down in 1960. In July 1965 first jet aircraft a Sud Caravelle joined Alia's fleet. In 1966 Alia became member of IATA and first European destinations were served starting with Rome, Paris and London. Throughout the 1960s Alia used Fokker F-27s on regional and domestic routes. In 1971first Boeing 707 joined the fleet. In 1973 first brand new Boeing 727s arrived. First wide-body in Alia's fleet was Boeing 747 delivered in April 1977 enabling Alia to expand its network to New York. Throughout the 1980s ALIA operated Lockheed Tristars, first arrived in 1981, and Boeing 747s on its long-haul flights together with Boeing 707s used on less dense and cargo routes. In 1983 Alia moves its operations to newly opened Queen Alia International Airport from Marka airport in Amman. Alia changed its name to Royal Jordanian in 1986 and committed to fleet renewal by ordering Airbus A310s and A320s aircraft. The same year, flights to Moscow were inaugurated. First Airbus A310 joined the fleet in 1987. In 1996 RJ formed domestic subsidiary Arab Wings and flights commenced between Amman and Aqaba using DHC-8 turboprops. In June 2002, first Airbus A340 is put into service to Bangkok and New York. In December 2006 RJ received its first Embraer ERJ-195 regional jet. Today, Airbus A310s, A320s and A340s form bulk of RJ fleet. Royal Jordanian network stretches from Chicago, New York, Montreal in the West to Delhi, Colombo, Mumbai, Bangkok and Hong Kong in the East. In Africa Khartoum, Tunis, Tripoli and Cairo are served. Royal Jordanian serves Amsterdam, Paris, London, Madrid, Rome, Athens, Zurich, Geneva, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Moscow and Budapest in Europe. Royal Jordanian is one of few airlines serving Iraq where Erbil, As Sulaymaniyah, Baghdad and Basra are served. Dense regional network throughout Arabian Peninsula is also served. RJ is OneWorld airline alliance member since April 2006.
