Founded as an associate member of the Intasun Group which became in 1980s second largest leisure tour agency in UK after Thomson Group. Two former Dan-Air London executives Errol Cossey and Martin O'Regan were instrumental in creation of Air Europe. Air Europe operated its first flight in May 1979 with a Boeing 737-2S3. Since 1983 airline also operated 757's alongside its 737 fleet on charter tourist flights to Europe and North Africa.
Airline also launched scheduled operations in late 1980s from its hub at Gatwick and established subsidiaries including Air Europa in Spain. At its peak, Air Europe became largest operator at Gatwick. Both Intasun and Air Europe were owned by International Leisure Group which ran into financial troubles in late 1980s and ultimately brought down Air Europe. ILG declared bankruptcy in March 1991.
Air Europa survived this collapse.
