Flag carrier of Tanzania formed after East African Airways collpased in 1977. Airliner was owned by Air Tanzania Corporation which was established by government of Tanzania. In 2002 airline was privatized and sole final bidder South African Airways purchased 49% stake. After 4 years of losses government of Tanzania purchased back SAA share and became again sole owner. Airline operated regional network to destinations in neighbouring countries as well as domestic network. Airline was grounded temporarily by Civil Aviation Authority of Tanzania in December 2008 due to safety and maintenance violations. Went through several periods of being grounded until resurrected by Tanzanian Govt in 2016 with orders for brand new aircraft.
