note
The airline was established in 1989 as a subsidiary of Canadian Airlines, to focus on the transportation needs of northern Canadian communities. In September 1998, Canadian North was purchased by Norterra, a wholly Northern aboriginal-owned holding company, whose ownership is divided equally among the Inuvialuit Development Corporation, representing the Inuvialuit people of the western Canadian Arctic, and Nunasi Corporation, representing the Inuit people of Nunavut. Canadian North also offers flight training service at its center in Edmonton Alberta where Canada's only Boeing 737-300 level D flight simulator is located. In July 2018, the parent companies of Canadian North and First Air announced plans to merge the two airlines. On November 1, 2019, the two airlines were merged on paper, trading as Canadian North. In May 2021, the operating certificates of the two carriers were combined.
