note
Air Wisconsin, founded by Preston Wilbourne initially as Fox Cities Airlines in 1963 and began operations in August 1965 between Appleton and Chicago using de Havilland Doves. It became an early operator of the Twin Otter, Swearingen Metroliner, and Dash 7. In 1970 it became the first publicly-held airline. BAe 146 jet service began in 1983. It acquired a neighboring regional carrier, Mississippi Valley Airlines in 1985, and Aspen Airways in 1991. It became a United Express carrier in 1986. The airline at one time was publicly traded but now is privately held. United Airlines bought Air Wisconsin in 1992 and sold its turboprop fleet to TWA express and its Dulles based operations to Atlantic Coast Airlines then sold it and its jet BAe 146 fleet to CJT Holdings in 1993. Air Wisconsin was then renamed Air Wisconsin Airlines Corporation (AWAC) as UAL retained the rights to the Air Wisconsin name and logo.
AWAC aquired the assets of Mountain Air Express in Feb1998, allowing expansion to the west.
AWAC operates United Express services from the Chicago, Denver, And Washington (Dulles) hubs.
In August 2022 United Airlines made decision not to extend its feeder contract with Air Wisconsin. Soon thereafter Air Wisconsin renewed its feeder contract with American Airlines. All United flights ended on June 1st, 2023 and is now only operating for American Eagle.
