Low cost scheduled passanger and cargo airline. Airline was founded when Tony Fernandez (Tune Air Sdn Bhd) purchased bankrupt AirAsia then owned by DRB Hicom Corp owned by Malaysia Government. Tony Fernandez purchased AirAsia for symbolic 1RM. By 2002, AirAsia was earning money as Low cost airline. Second hub in Johor Bahru opened in 2003. In 2004 AirAsia established its Thai subsidiary and acquired 49% stake in Indonesias Awair. Awair was later rebranded AirAsia. AirAsia achieved worlds lowest operating cost and average utilization of their aircraft at 13 hours a day. It has ordered 175 Airbus A320s and took over Malaysia Airlines domestic network. In 2018 AirAsia Group formed Teleport, a cargo and logistics provider. In 2020 it began ts own freight operations using the company's A320s, followed by cargo-converted Boeing 737s.
