MidAtlantic Airways USA United States

note

Potomac Air was formed by US Airways Group in 2000 to facilitate the transfer of assets for a proposed US Airways-United merger. The plan involved creating a "ready-made" airline to be sold to DC Air, a new entrant carrier that would serve Washington National Airport. Potomac merged with Paradise Island Airways in October 2000 and began operations on January 5, 2001, using Dash 8 aircraft to serve three cities. By mid-2001, its fleet had grown to eight airplanes.

Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, the closure of Washington National Airport caused Potomac to cease operations. The US Airways-United merger was ultimately disapproved for competitive reasons, making the sale to DC Air unnecessary and rendering Potomac redundant.

In 2003, US Airways announced plans to use Potomac's certificate to launch MidAtlantic Airways, a low-cost carrier designed to operate regional jets on US Airways routes. Before resuming operations, it was decided that MidAtlantic would operate on the US Airways certificate rather than Potomac's. MidAtlantic would operate as an "airline within an airline" with flights trading as US Airways Express. The MidAtlantic operating authority was revoked by DOT on August 5, 2003. The "MidAtlantic" flights launched on April 4, 2004.

On May 28, 2006, the "MidAtlantic" operation ended as part of US Airways’ strategic realignment following its merger with America West. Its aircraft were turned over to other US Airways Express carriers.
