One of the original the local service airlines certified by C.A.B. Company was founded in 1941 as Southwest Airways by World War I aviator and Hollywood producer Leland Hayward. Company was awarded the Los Angeles - San Francisco - Medford mail route in May 1946 and started operations in December. Southwest Airways changed its name to Pacific Air Lines in March 1958. By the 1960s network stretched from Seattle to San Diego and Arizona. Airline's first jet was delivered on 8/5/66 a brand new 727. Airline was purchased by Howard Hughes and merged with Bonanza and West Coast to form Air West.
