note
Freedom Airlines was FAA Part 121 operator founded as a subsidiary of Mesa Air Group. It was formed to operate CRJ700 and CRJ900 aircraft as America West Express. Because of pilot contract limitations at US Airways, Mesa could not operate these larger aircraft for any airline and continue flying as US Airways Express operating CRJ200s and ERJ 145s. Freedom's first flight was October 26, 2002 for America West Express. In 2003 the US Airways pilot agreement changed, allowing Mesa to operate larger aircraft. Beginning in September, the aircraft were transferred to Mesa, and all new CRJ-900s deliveries went directly to Mesa. The final Freedom CRJ-900 flight was October 26, 2004. The airline briefly operated one Beech 1900D as a backup aircraft for America West Express to keep its certificate active. It then entered into an agreement with Delta Airlines to operate 12 Dash 8 and 36 50-seat regional jets on the east coast. A 2007 change eliminated the Dash 8s but added several new CRJ-900 aircraft to the agreement. Freedom also operated feeder service for Delta Air Lines using Embraer ERJ-145s starting in October 2005. Delta canceled this contract, forcing Freedom Airlines to cease operations in August 2010.
