note
Flag carrier of Nigeria formed as a joint venture of Nigeria Government and Virgin Atlantic Airways. Nigeria have not had successful national airline since the demise of Nigeria Airways and Virgin Nigeria was to fill in this void.
Airline commenced operations in June 2005 on Lagos - London (Gatwick) route using Airbus A340 aircraft. Soon domestic and regional network was established and airline enjoyed steady growth. Johannesburg was added to its long-haul schedule.
In summer of 2008 Virgin Atlantic Airways announced its intention to sell of its stake. Airline was forced to move its operations to Terminal 2 at Lagos by Nigeria's authorities. Terminal 2 at Lagos has recently opened and is used primarily by domestic carriers. It is detached from the main Terminal at Lagos making it difficult for transit passengers.
In January 2009 all long-haul operations were terminated.
Airline continued to serve its domestic network and Abidjan, Cotonou, Monrovia, Douala, Banjul, Libreville, Dakar and Accra in Western Africa.
On September 17 2009, Virgin Atlantic terminated its ties to the airline and airline was re-branded Nigerian Eagle and changed name again 2 Jun 2010 to Air Nigeria.
Company resumed long-haul flights to London Gatwick using Airbus A330 in May 2012. On September 11 2012 all operations have ceased because airline ran out of operating cash.
