BUA was formed as merger of Hunting-Clan Air Transport and Silver City Airways in 1960. BUA became largest independent airline in United Kingdom and operated charter and scheduled passenger flights to continental Europe, Africa and South America.In April 9,1965 BUA operated the very first revenue flight in the world of a Bac 1-11 between London Gatwick and Genoa, Italy. In January 1966 BUA commenced domestic jet service using BAC 1-11s initially on Gatwick to Glasgow, Belfast, Newcastle and Edinburgh. Its military contracts included troop transport to West Germany. Airline also operated all cargo flights to East Africa (Kampala, Nairobi, Lusaka) via Frankfurt that it inherited from Hunting-Clan. Unique passenger BAC 1-11 service to Lagos with stops at Lisbon, Las Palmas, Bathurst, Freetown and Accra was operated in late 1960s, as well as long-haul VC-10 service to Rio de Janeiro, SAo Paulo, Buenos Aires and Santiago.
In November 1970 company was acquired by a charter airline based in Scotland - Caledonian Airways. It was briefly called Caldonian / BUA - Scottish International Airline but within a year British Caledonian Airways title was adopted.
