National airline of China and second largest airline in China was created when Civil Aviation Administration of China CAAC spun off its airline business in 1988. Its logo depicts letters VIP stylized as phoenix bird. This replaced the Chinese flag on airline's vertical stabilizers used by CAAC. Rest of the livery remained the same. Airline grew to become one of the top 20 world's airlines in passenger boardings and cargo carried. In 2006 almost 34 million passengers were carried and over 120 destinations were served. Air China floated its stock on Hong Kong and London stock markets in 2004. Air China operates extensive domestic network. Long-haul destinations in North America (Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York), Europe (Stockholm, Moscow, Frankfurt, London, Paris, Madrid, Rome, Athens, Munich), Middle East (Karachi, Dubai) and Australia (Melbourne, Sydney) are served. Air China also operated Beijing-Madrid-Sao Paulo route between 2006 and 2008. Many destination in Japan are served from both Beijing and Shanghai and some from Chengdu. Air China is also one of few flying to Pyongyang in North Korea. Kuala Lumpur, Rangoon, Delhi, Kathmandu, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh and Singapore are served in South Asia.
