National airline of Panama. Airline commenced operations using surplus DC-3 aircraft on domestic network. In 1966 San Jose became its first international destinations. In 1969 its first turboprop aircraft, a Avro 748, joined the fleet. This enabled great international expansions and Medelin, Cartagena, San Salvador and Guatemala City were added to its schedule.
In 1980 airline decided to focus on international flights exclusively when it received its first pure jet a Boeing 737-200. Miami was added to its schedule the same year. Airline expanded in 1990s. Buenos Aires, Lima, Guayaquil and Lima were added to its network. In 1999 airline formed strategic alliance with Continental Airlines and adopted new corporate identity reflecting this change. Since then, New York, Los Angeles, Orlando and Sao Paulo became its new long-haul destinations. In 2005 Copa went public on NYSE. In 2010 Copa took over operations of Colombia's domestic carrier AeroRepublica and operates as Copa Colombia. Copa established "Hub of the Americas" at Tocuman International airport enabling passengers to transit between anywhere in South, Central and North America with only one stop. In July 2012, Copa became member of Star Alliance.
