Subsidiary of W.R. Carpenter & Co and formed by their merger with Pacific Aerial Transport. In 1937 MAL was awarded mail routes from Salamaua (mining town across strait from Lae which no longer exists). Island Airways Ltd was absorbed in May 1948. Gibbes Sepik Airways Ltd was purchased in 1958. Company was acquired by Ansett Transport Industries in January 1961, and rebranded as Ansett-M.A.L In May 1968, name Ansett Airlines of Papua New Guinea was adopted. Airline operated passenger, mail and cargo flights throughout P.N.G. centered on Lae. Airline was dissolved in 1973 after Papua New Guinea became independent nation and formed its own airline Air Niugini.
