Full service scheduled passenger and cargo airline was founded by government of Shanghai as first independent airline in China. Airline begun operations same year it was founded serving domestic destinations. In 1997 Shanghai airlines inaugurated international service to South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand and Macau. Shanghai Airlines also operates dedicated cargo flights in cooperation with EVA Air. In 2002 Shanghai Airlines floated its stock on Shanghai Stock Exchange. Shanghai Airlines has become official member of Star Alliance in December 2007 and as results has code-sharing agreements with other members for flights to Europe, Asia and North America. Shanghai Airlines has grown into one of the best run and safest airlines in the world. In 2011 China Eastern acquired the company. Since then it operates as subsidiary of China Eastern but maintains its identity. As a result of this acquisition Shanghai Airlines had to leave Star Airlines and on June 11 2011 joined SkyTeam airline alliance.
