Davies & Newman Ltd (shipping agency) founded the airline which initially specialized in ad-hoc cargo and charter flights from Southend and Lasham airfields.
Scheduled service was started in 1956 to Jersey and in 1960's scheduled flights from Cardiff and Bristol commenced.
In 1967 airline received its first jet - a Comet 4B. During this time international scheduled service started to the lower countries and Norway.
In 1972 airline took over Skyways International Airlines
Dan Air also operated trans-Atlantic flights with Boeing 707, and leisure charters throughout the Mediterranean.
Financial difficulties in later 1980's and early 1990's led to British Airways purchase of Dan-Air for symbolic sum in 1992.
