DHL Airways began operations with small aircraft operating in the western US. Boeing 727s were acquired in 1983, and two air hubs were established by parent DHL Corp., at Cincinnati and Salt Lake City.
When DHL Corp. was sold to Deutsche Post, the airline unit was sold to American investors and the airline was renamed Astar Air Cargo in July 2003.
After DHL Express ended its contract with Astar on June 1, 2012, a small fleet of DC-8s were maintained for charter operations.
