Largest regional airline in Germany was formed when NFD of Nuernberg and RFG of Dortmund merged. Operations commenced in January 1994 on Nurenberg - Paris route using BAe 146 aircraft. Eurowings also started leisure charter operations in 1995. Leased Airbus A310 from Hapag-Lloyd were used at first and in 1997 first Airbus A319 was introduced. In January 2001, Lufthansa purchases minority stake in Eurowings. In October 2002 Eurowings transformes its Germanwings charter subsidiary into low-cost no frills airline based at Cologne Bonn airport and in 2003 Stuttgart is added as second hub. The same year, Eurowings becomes part of Lufthansa Regional airlines alliance. Eurowins and Germanwings carry over 10 million passengers annualy on revenue of over 840m Euro and employ over 1,300 people. In 2009 Eurowings sold Germanwings to Lufthansa. Lufthansa Group decided to merged its Germanwings operations into Eurowings. In June 2015 it was announced that Vienna Austria based subsidiary will be formed with separate AOC called Eurowings Europe.
