Airline serving Gibraltar and leisure destinations throughout the Mediterreanean was founded in 1931 as part of Girbraltar Shipping Co. Airline started operations from its base at Gibraltar to Tangier, Morocco useing Saunders-Roe flying boat. After the war Gibraltar Airways began cooperation with BEA British European Airways and commenced joined operatons to London Heathrow. In 1974, after BEA merged with BOAC to form British Airways, this cooperation was transfered to British Airways. In 1989 name was changed to GB Airways and airline moved its headquaters to London Gatwick Airport. Great expansion of its leisure and scheduled flights to the Meditterranean from Gatwick took place. Since 1995, GB Airways operated as British Airways franchise and all its flights were operated with BA prefix and in BA livery. EasyJet purchased GB Airways in January 2008 to gain slots at Gatwick and Manchester. GB Airways continued operations as British Airways franchisee until the end of March 2008.
