note
Hawaiian airlines can trace its history to Inter-Island Airways founded in 1929 to provide mail and passenger service throughout the Hawaii Islands. Airline commenced operations in November same year between Honolulu and Maui using Sikorsky S.38 flying boat, this marked first commercial flight between Hawaii islands. In 1941 the Hawaiian Airlines name was adopted and DC-3s joined the fleet. By 1950 all of the major Hawaiian airlines were served. The airline added jet service with Douglas DC-9s in 1966. In 1984 it added DC-8s and began flying to the South Pacific region. In 1985 it began to acquire a fleet of L-1011s to operate US mainland services from Honolulu, and 1986, to Auckland and Sydney via a stop in Pago Pago. In September 1993, the airline entered bankruptcy which lasted a year. It entered into a marketing relationship with American Airlines, and leased six DC-10s from the carrier to replace its L-1011s. Eventually, the DC-10s were replaced with Boeing 767-300s, while DC-9s were replaced with Boeing 717s. In March 2003, the airline entered bankruptcy again, which lasted slightly over two years.San Diego-based Ranch Capital acquired a majority stake in the airline as part of the restructuring. Beginning in 2008, the airline began an Asian expansion, with new flights to Manila, and eventually Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. In 2010, A330s began arriving which would eventually replace the 767s. On March 11, 2014, it launched "Ohaha by Hawaiian", an ATR 42 inter-island service operated by Empire Airlines. It also operated freighter service using ATR 72s. Parrly due to the COVID pandemic, Ohana was shuttered in January 2021. In late 2017 it began operating s fleet of A321 NEOS on routes from Honolulu and the neighbor islands to the mainland. In 2024, the first Boeing 787 entered service. In December 2023, it was announced that Alaska Airlines Group had agreed to acquire Hawaiian for $1.9 billion. The sale closed on September 18, 2024, and the merger is expected to take 18 months to complete.
