Established in 2003 as Westpoint Airlines with its base in Calgary, the company was renamed Regional 1 Airlines in 2004. Scheduled services were operated in western Canada between 2004 and 2005, but since then the company has focused on charter services. On November 15, 2013, Air Georgian and Regional 1 Airlines completed a joint venture through the creation of a parent company, Regional Express Aviation Ltd. (“REAL”), based in Calgary, Alberta. The airline now operates as R1 Airlines. The Canadian Transportation Agency suspended R1's operating certificate in April 2019 for failing to maintain financial fitness requirements
