Airline founded by TAM and VASP to respond to governments efforts to establish airline service to communities that could not support jet service. VASP provided 6 Embraer EMB-110s aircraft and ground support at many airports in the regiona designated as central east by government in which TAR gained license to operate. Operations commenced in July same year on Sao Paulo-Ourinhos-Maringá route. Embraers were ,beginning in early 1980s, replaced with Fokker F-27 aircraft. In 1996 TAM Linha Aerea Regional name was adopted. In 2000 TAM Linha Aérea Regional and TAM Transportes Aéreos Meridionais to form TAM Linhas Aereas. The combined company became Brazil's leading airline with annual revenues of more than $1 billion, over 8,000 employees and 10.4 million passangers boardings.
