note
Airline was founded by Naresh Goyal who in 1974 founded Jetair Ltd to provide General Sales Agent services for foreign airlines in India. After deregulation of India's civil aviation in 1991, Naresh Goyal saw opportunity to start world class airline in India to compete with traditional carriers Air India and Indian Airlines. Operations started in May 1993 as ad-hoc charter air carrier. When further government restrictions were lifted, Jet Airways was able to start scheduled full service domestic passenger service in March 1994. International flights commenced in March 2004 when Chennai - Colombo route was innaugurated. Jet Airways soon added destinations London Heathrow, Singapore, Kathmandu and Kuala Lumpur using Boeing 777s. Later Brussels, New York, Toronto, Kuwait, Doha, Muscat, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Dhaka were added. Jet Airways was first Indian airline to use Airbus A340 when it used it on Mumbai - London route.
In August 2007 Mumbai - Newark route was inaugurated. In June 2008 Mumbai - Shanghai - San Francisco route was opened, making Jet Airways truly global carrier and second largest airline in India. Airline also developed Brussels into its hub for transfer of passengers between its flights to North America and secondary Indian markets.
Airline was forced to suspend its international operations in April 2019 because it did not have 20 operating aircraft which are needed for international operations under the Indian CAA rules. This happened after its 737 MAX planes were grounded by the regulators due to the recent fatal accidents of the type.
Airline has amassed nearly $1.6 billion of debt which makes it unlikely that it will survive without major outside investment.
