Founded in 1928 by Arthur Hanford Jr.as Hanfords Tri-State Airlines to provide air taxi and scheduled service from Sioux City to Minnesota, North Dakota and Nebraska. In July 1936 company was sold to Thomas Fortune Ryan III who moved headquarters to Kansas City. It was renamed Mid-Continet Airlines and was awarded Contract Air Mail route 48 from Minneapolis to Kansas City. In March 1940 airline become first to put Lockheed 18 Lodestar to service. Airline was bought by Braniff in 1952. At this time airline served 2 dozen destinations along the Missouri/Mississippi rivers coridor from Minot ND in the north to Houston and New Orleans in the south.
