Created in 1962. Scheduled passenger and cargo airline founded on March 18 1963, and commenced operations on August 20 1963. Airline was owned by government of Paraguay and at first served destinations in neighboring Bolivia, Brasil, Uruguay and Argentina. By 1980s LAPSA network included long-haul flights to Europe and North America serving Frankfurt, Brussels, Madrid, New York, Miami, Panama City, Mexico City and Toronto as well as South American gateways and some secondary markets in Brasil and Argentina. In March 1994 airline suspended operations for few months while restructuring and going through privatization. LAPSA resumed operations in February 1995. In summer 1996, the company was acquired by TAM of Brasil and rebranded at first to TAM Mercosur, later becoming TAM Paraguay. In March 2008 company was fully absorbed into its parent TAM Airlines.
