Lufttransport Union GmbH

note

Founded as charter airline Luftransport Union operating inclusive tours. It changed its name to Luftranspor Unternehmen in 1956. Operations commenced in October 1955 using a Vickers Viking. Airline received its first jet in August 1964 when it took delivery of Sud Caravelle. First long-haul wide-body aircraft, a Lockheed Tristar, was delivered in May 1973. Tristars were replaced by MD-11s beginning in December 1991. MD-11s proved soon too big and uneconomical since the era of tri-jets has already passed. LTU ordered Airbus A330s, of which first was delivered in February 1995. Boeing 767s were also used in the transition period. In March 2007 Air Berlin announced acquisition of LTU and decision was made to integrate most of its operations under Air Berlin identity, giving Air Berlin global reach. Combined airline has become 4th largest in europe with over 22 million boardings annually.
