note
PT Mandala Airlines was founded on April 17, 1969.
In its early years Mandala Airlines operated flights between Jakarta and destinations in eastern Indonesia, such as Ambon, Gorontalo, Kendari, Makassar and Manado. In 1972 Mandala took over Seulawah Air Service, which flew to cities in western Indonesia, such as Banda Aceh, Banjarmasin, Medan, Padang, Palembang, Pekanbaru and Pontianak, giving the airline a national coverage.
Suffered a series of financial and safety related issues which finally led to cessation of operations in Jan 2011. Tiger Airways (LCC partly owned by Singapore Airlines) bought 35% stake in the carrier in 2013 to emulate Air Asia's strategy of setting up sister airlines in other South Asian countries to gain comprehensive regional network. Operations resumed April 2012 with new A320 aircraft from the Tiger Airways Group bulk order with Airbus. However Tiger Airways is unprofitable and not big enough to be able to absorb another money loosing LCC. Tiger Airways Holdings under pressure from Singapore Airlines decided to axe Mandala. All operations of Mandala will cease after July 1st 2014.
