note

In April 1952 San Francisco Peace Treaty was signed effectively ending US occupation of Japan. New laws enabled formation of private enterprise. ANA was founded by Masuichi Midoro as Nippon Helicopter & Aeroplane Transports Company, hence its IATA "NH" code. The airline operated initially cargo and helicopter service in war destroyed Japan. Airline changed name to its current title in 1957 when it merged with Far East Airlines FEA. FEA was another successful post-occupation domestic carriers. The two companies agreed to merge its operations and Masuichi Midoro has become the head of new company. ANA's first fixed wing aircraft were DeHavilland DH-104 Doves which entered service in 1955 on Osaka-Tokyo route, Friendship 27's and Viscounts 828 were added in 1961 and replaced Convair 340/440's. In 1963 ANA acquired small regional airline Fujita Airways. ANA's first jet a Boeing 727 was delivered in 1965. 727 has become backbone of ANA's operations for next 20 years. Four years later ANA purchased 737's. In 1971, first international flight was operated from Tokyo to Hong Kong albeit only as a charter. Its first scheduled international flight did not take off until 1986 from Tokyo to Guam and Washington DC. ANA recognized importance of leisure travel in a rapidly growing economy that Japan experienced during the 1970s. In 1973 ANA established its hotel subsidiary which to this day provides sizable portion of ANA's revenue. Airline's first wide-body L1011 Tristar was delivered in 1973. In 1990 ANA took delivery of 747-400 and year later Airbus A320. In 1994 ANA recorded its first fiscal year loss. ANA was a launch customer of 777 which it took first delivery of in 1995. Airbus A321 was introduced in 1998. During the 1990s, ANA transformed itself from primarily domestic airline to one of the top 10 international carriers in the world. In 1999 ANA joined Star Alliance. In 2000, ANA carried 43.7 million passengers and had 13,500 employees. ANA has become launch customer for Boeing 787.
