National airline of Australia was formed as Queensland And Northern Territory Air Service. In January 1934 name was changed to QANTAS Empire Airways because QANTAS launched its first International route to Singapore, in cooperation with Empire Airways. In May 1945 QANTAS added its first European destination, London to its network. The "Kangaroo route" was served with Avro Lancasters which were since 1954 being replaced with Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellations. First jet was introduced in April 1959 when QANTAS took delivery of a brand new Boeing 707-138. In 1967 airline adopted present name QANTAS Airways. Although QANTAS started as domestic operator, it became the only International airline of Australia. After last Boeing 707 was retired in April 1978 QANTAS operated only Boeing 747s on long-haul network to Europe, Southeast Asia, North America, Southern Africa and Far East.
