Airline was founded by Milt Kuolt to serve routes in Pacific Northwest abandoned by larger carriers after 1978 Airline Deregulation Act. Airline began service between Seattle, Yakima and Pasco using leased Fokker F-27 aircraft. In 1982 Horizon Air acquired Air Oregon a well established regional carrier. A year later Traswestern of Utah was purchased giving Horizon access to the mountain states including Idaho. In 1984 Horizon Air became public company. In 1986 company became part of Alaska Air Group - holding company of Alaska Airlines. Horizon Air retained its brand and independent management, but became exclusive regional carrier for Alaska Airlines. Horizon Air employs over 4,000 people and serves 47 destinations throughout western USA and Canada.
