One of the 5 regional airlines created as a result of Brazilian government decision in November 1975 to split country into 5 regions and issue one airline operating certificate for each. Rio-Sul was to serve Southeastern region and was created around Top Táxi Aéreo with the help of VARIG. Operations commenced in September 1976. In 2002 airline became part of VARIG Group. Airline was incorporated to Varig Group and continued to operate as such until VARIG's demise in June 2006. Its brand name was sold to Volo do Brasil along with original VARIG brand but was not used.
