SkyWest Airlines was founded in 1972 by Ralph Atkin to meet the needs of businessmen traveling between Salt Lake City and St. George, Utah. During the first year of operations, 256 passengers utilized the services of the fledgling airline. Company went public in 1986. In 1987 Delta Air Lines bought 20% stake and SkyWest Airlines became one of four Delta Connection carriers. SkyWest continues its affiliation with Delta at hubs in Salt Lake City and Dallas/Fort Worth with more than 400 daily flights. On October 1, 1997, SkyWest began its affiliation with United Airlines. SkyWest is now the primary United Express carrier up and down the West Coast, providing more than 600 daily departures and serving United hubs at Los Angeles, Seattle/Tacoma, Portland, San Francisco, and Denver. In total, SkyWest today provides approximately 1,000 daily flights to 97 cities in 28 states and Canada. With a fleet of 74 Embraer-120 turboprops and 93 Canadair Regional Jets, SkyWest Airlines is the nation's largest independently operated regional airline and growing fast. In February of 2002, SkyWest was named Regional Airline of the Year by Air Transport World. The airline was Professional Pilot Magazine's Top Regional Airline of the Year in April of 2000. On July 9, 2000, Aviation Week & Space Technology named SkyWest the Best Managed Regional Airline in the world. SkyWest Airlines started small, but has grown into a top Regional carrier and one of the most financially sound airlines in the industry. In 2008 SkyWest carried over 20 million passengers with revenue of $743 million.
