Destination Sun Airways

note

Airline was certificated in 1992 as Destination Sun Airways to operate 727s between Florida and the northeastern US. Before operations commenced, its certificate was transferred to Conquest Sun Airlines, which was jointly owned by Destination Sun and Conquest Airlines (5C). Conquest Sun was sold to AirTran Corp. in 1996, parent of Mesaba Airlines. Due to conflicts with Northwest Airlines pilot scope clause, AirTran had to spin off Conquest Sun. Renamed AirTran Airways, operations began October 6, 1994 from Orlando with Boeing 737-200s. AirTran Airways was purchased by Valujet on November 18, 1997, which merged into AirTran by June 1, 1998. Airline was acquired by Southwest Airlines during May 2011, which continued to operate the two airlines separately. During 2013 the airTran operation began to merge into Southwest. Some airTran destinations were eliminated, and the 717 fleet was leased to Delta. The last airTran flights operated on December 28, 2014.
