Began low fare operations from Atlanta in 1993 with DC-9-30s. Was launch customer for MD-95 (now Boeing 717). In July 1997, it entered into a merger agreement with AirTran Airways. In anticipation of the merger, the ValuJet name was changed to AirTran Airlines on September 23, 1997. The transaction closed on November 17, 1997 with both airlines becoming subsidiaries of AirTran Holdings.. Operations were merged onto the AirTran Airways certificate in April 1998. The two companies formally merged on August 6, 1999.
