Scheduled passenger low-cost operator. Founded by Constantino family of transportation conglomerate Grupo Áurea. Airline began operations in January 2001 and has since become largest domestic and second largest international airline in Brazil. In 2007 Airline purchased some assets of new VARIG, an airline that bought the trade name from original VARIG which was under bankruptcy protection at the time. The brand was used to start international operations, althought only Gol flight numbers are used. In 2008 GOL served dense domestic network as well as Lima, Santiago, Panama, Asuncion, Cordoba, Rosario and Buenos Aires. In December 2010, Passaredo Transportes became regional feeder for Gol. In August 2011 VRG Linhas Aéreas, owner of the brands Gol and Varig purchased another Brazilian low cost operator WebJet for $64 million but continues to operate it under its brand. Company is traded on NYSE and its principal shareholders are AeroPar Participações (77%), Venture (17.6%) and American International Group (5.4%). GAC Inc. is a Cayman Island-based subsidiary of GOL which provides financing and leasing services.
