Airline can trace its origins to charte and aero-taxi operation Aircraft Innsbruck, brainchild of optics magnate Gernot Swarovski. In April 1980, name Tyrolean Airways is introduced and scheduled services to Vienna and Zurich from its base at Innsbruck commenced using Dash-7 aircraft. Airline introduced Dash-8, in 1985 and thus became the first operator of the type on the continent. Airline goes public in 1988. Milestone year for Tyrolean was 1994 when Austrian Airlines suspended its domestic and regional services and took share of 45% in Tyrolean to replace this lost capacity. In 1996 Tyrolean takes delivery of its first Canadair Regional Jet. Tyrolean was named regional airline of the year 1998 by Air Transport World, and in 3/2000 Tyrolean, partner of Lauda Air and Austrian becomes part of Star Alliance. Today, Tyrolean employes over 1000 people and carries over 2 million passangers per year to 6 Austrian and 45 European cities. Company is whole owned subsidiary of Austrian Airlines since 3/1998. In fall 2003 Tyrolean was acquired by Austrian Airlines and became wholly owned subsidiary called Austrian arrows.
