Republic Airline Inc.

note

Formed in 1999 as a subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings (RAH). Company filed for certificate authority in early 2003 with plans to operate 23 ERJ-145s as US Airways Express for which it received authority in November. Before beginning operations it changed its business plan which now called for the operation of a fleet of ERJ 170s as United Express. Since it did not receive FAA certification prior to the date called for by the United agreement, ERJ 170s were operated by RAH subsidiary Chautauqua Airlines, then transferred to RAH subsidiary Shuttle America. Flights began on October 4, 2005 operating ERJ 170s for US Airways Express. The airline eventually acquired ERJ 175s to operate as US Airways Express. In March 2007, it began operating ERJ 170s for Frontier Airlines under what would have been a 17 airplane contract. Republic ended this agreement in April 2008. With Frontier's bankruptcy, RAH agreed to acquire Frontier in 2009. Republic acquired 10 ERJ 190s from US Airways plus 8 additional units for use in the Frontier system. In October 2008 Republic began operating ERJ 170s and ERJ 190s for Midwest Airlines, in a plan where Midwest would temporarily replace its in-house flying with contracted flying. On July 30, 2009, RAH acquired Midwest, and merged the Frontier and Midwest subsidiaries on October 1, 2010. In late 2012, Republic began operating a fleet of Dash 8 Q400s for UNITEDEXPRESS. ERJ 175s were added in 2015, which were scheduled to eventually replace the Q400s. On August 1, 2013 it began operating a fleet of ERJ 175s as American Eagle. This fleet would be augmented with the US Airways Express airplanes with the October 2015 combination of AA and US. In December 2013 Frontier was sold to Indigo Partners and the Republic service contract ended on January 1, 2014. RAH and its subsidiaries filed for bankruptcy on February 25, 2016 reportedly as a result of a continuing pilot shortage. The Q400s were removed from service earlier than expected, while several leased ERJ 170s were returned to their owners. Republic merged with sister Shuttle America on January 31, 2017.
