FFT F9 Frontier Airlines Frontier Flight USA United States

note

Frontier Airlines was founded in 1994 by executives from the original Frontier Airlines. Operations began on July 5, 1994, with a flight from Denver to Fargo using a Boeing 737-200 fleet. Company later acquired some second-hand 737-300s. In 1999 an order for A318 and A319 was placed to be phased in beginning in 2001, and had completely replaced the 737s by 2005. The new aircraft featured LiveTV. A holding company was formed in 2006 to take advantage of favorable tax laws in Delaware. In 2002, Frontier introduced Frontier JetExpress as a regional airline brand. Initially Mesa Airlines operated its flights, but in 2004, Horizon Air of Seattle took over its operations. In January 2007, a new agreement with Republic Airlines called for the operation on 17 ERJ 170s, replacing the Horizon CRJ-700 services. The new flights would be operated under Frotnier's code, but would not be marketed as JetExpress. In December 2007 Frontier Airlines Holding subsidiary Lynx Aviation began operations using Bombardier Q400s turboprops on routes of less than 650 miles. Due to a disagreement with its credit card processor, Frontier Airlines Holdings and its subsidiaries filed for bankruptcy on April 10, 2008. Its agreement with Republic Airlines was terminated. As part of the reorganization process, two competing offers for Frontier, one from Southwest, the other from Republic, were received. Republic was the successful bidder, and Frontier became a subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings on October 1, 2009. Aircraft from Republic Airlines Holdings were again added, including some ERJ-145s operated as Frontier Express. In 2010 Republic elected to merge its Frontier and Midwest Airlines operations, which resulted Frontier and Republic aircraft taking over Midwest routes. Midwest was, in effect, shutdown. By the middle of 2012, most flights had been eliminated from Midwest's former Milwaukee hub, resulting in significant job loss there. In November 2012, Frontier began operation at Trenton, NJ with hopes of gaining a foothold in the New York and Philadelphia markets. By the middle of 2014, 17 cities will be service from Trenton. In December 2013 Frontier was sold to Indigo Partners LLC, formerly a major shareholder in Spirit Airlines. By January 1, 2014 all Republic aircraft had been removed, and Frontier became 100% Airbus. Headquarters moved (from 12015 East 46th St, Denver, CO) in late 2017
