note
National airline of Slovenia was founded in 1961 as Adria Aviopromet. At the time it was founded as charter operator and used Douglas DC-6s seconhand from KLM. Between 1968 and 1986 Adria Aviopromet cooperated with Yugoslav Import Export company called Inex. It was known as Inex Adria Aviopromet during this period.
Airline introduced first jet, a Douglas DC-9, in 1968. Bulk of Adria's business were charters from western European cities to Yugoslav resorts along the Adriatic Sea. Airline became member or IATA in 1980.
Airline also experimented with scheduled service in 1980s. One of the routes flown was Belgrade - Larnaca. After break away of Slovenia from Yugoslav union in 1991, Adria Airways became national carrier of the new nation.
Fleet upgrade was initiated with Airbus A320 and later A319 aircraft as well as Canadair CRJ-200 and CRJ-900 regional jet. In 1996 Adria Airways was privatized.
In November 2004 Adria Airways became member of Star Alliance. In 2011 Adria carried 1.16 million passengers. In 2008 Adria Ariways carried just over 1 million passengers and employed over 700 people. In July 2012 Slovenia government put airline up to sale, starting privatization process.
Struggling financially, airline filed for bankruptcy protection on September 30 2019 and ceased all flights. It was operating only Frankfurt shuttle at this point.
