National airline of Yugoslavia formed by the government in 1945 as a branch of Yugoslav Air Force. In January 1947 airline was reorganized as its own entity and operations commenced on April 1st 1947 using Douglas DC-3s military version C-47 and and two Junkers JU-52s. Airline's first routes were Beograd-Zagreb-Ljubljana, Zagreb-Sarajevo and Beograd-Prague-Warsaw. There was another civil airline in Yugoslavia called Aeroput which was formed in June 1927. Its assets and employees were absorbed by JAT. JAT was the last airline to order Douglas DC-6s, first arriving in November 1957. JAT entered jet age in January 1963 when first Sud Caravelle joined the fleet. Those were replaced by Douglas DC-9s starting in April 1969. In December 1978 JAT received its firs long-haul jet, a Boeing 707, which enabled expansion of service and New York, Chicago, Singapore, Melbourne and Sydney. JAT was one of the first airlines to order improved Boeing 737-300s, first of which was delivered in 1985. Ethnic wars that brought collapse of Yugoslavia hindered development of JAT throughout the 1990s. In August 2003 JAT Jugoslovenski Aerotransport was re-branded JAT Airways reflecting political change. Airline has never regained its former status. JAT was reduced to regional airline of new nation of Serbia. Today JAT serves European and Middle East network from its base at Belgrade using Boeing 737-300s and ATR aircraft. On August 1st 2013 after Etihad Airways purchased 49% stake in the carrier with the remaining shares being held by the government of Serbia. Airline was officially renamed Air Serbia on October 28th 2013.
