Etihad which means United Arab Emirates in its arabic abbreviation was founded as national carrier of United Arab Emirates. It has been without doubt inspired by success of its neighboring competitor Emirates. Operations commenced in November 2003 and its first destination became Beirut. In 2004, Etihad placed largest aircraft order in history for a startup operator. Airline was founded by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi and enjoys government support. Etihad grew rapidly in its first 5 years of service. By 2008 it was handling over 6 million passengers annualy on global network of 50 destinations. New York, Toronto, Chicago (2010) are served in North America, Dublin, Manchester, Frankfurt, Brussels, London, Geneva, Milan, Minsk, Moscow, Athens, Larnaca, Istanbul and Paris in Europe, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne in Australia, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Khartoum, Cairo and Casablanca in Africa, Astana, Almaty, Beijing, Manial, Bangkok, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Singapore, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Colombo and numerous destinations in India and Pakistan are served in Asia. Etihad also operates dense Arabian Penninsula network including Tehran. Airline has received numerous awards, including 2009 Best Business Class by Skytrax. It employed in 2009 over 8,500 people, which rose to 20,000 by 2015 In November 2013, Etihad had purchased a 1/3 stake in Swiss-based Darwin Airline, which began operating some flights as Etihad Regional in January 2014. Almost immediately, the Etihad Regional operation began operation to shrink due to competitive pressures, and ended by July 2017, when Etihad sold its share in Darwin to Adria Arways.
