note
Regional airline based in Scotland. Loganair is the only scheduled carrier operating into Shetland and Orkney Islands off the coast of Scotland which they serve since 1964. Airline was founded by Logan Construction Co. as air taxi using Piper Aztec aircraft out of Edinburgh. Already in 1964 scheduled service was provided. Airline expanded steadily and by 1980s started to take over some of the British Airways routes. Service to Belfast from Glasgow was introduced. In September 1983 BMA purchased controling stake in the airline and LoganAir became part of Airlines of Britain Group which also included British Regional and Manx Airlines. Airline's influence culminated in 1988 when it received factory fresh BAe 146. This was first pure jet for the airline. After its parent BMA restructured in 1994, Loganair's international network was transfered to British Regional. Airline was left with Intra-Scotland routes which it operated under franchise agreement with British Airways.
Airline was bought by its management in 1997 with greatly reduced fleet. Its focus, not unlike its beginnings, became regular service to Shetland and Orkney Islands from Scotland. Airline's unique niche market gives it some curios operations. Its flights to Barra Island lands on a sandy beach during low tide. Airline also operates shortest scheduled flight which is 2 minute hop on island of Wastray.
In 2008 Loganair became franchise of another regional airline Flybe which grew out of Jersey European Airlines.
