note
Braniff, Inc., also called "Braniff II," began operations on March 1, 1984, as the successor to Braniff International Airways. Backed by Hyatt Corporation, the airline launched with Boeing 727-200s, serving 20 U.S. cities from its hub at Dallas/Fort Worth. It initially focused on business travelers but shifted to a low-fare, single-class model later that year.
In the late 1980s, Braniff expanded by acquiring Florida Express, adding BAC One-Elevens and an Orlando hub. The airline introduced Airbus A320s in 1989 but struggled with high costs. Regional connections were provided through Braniff Express, linking smaller cities to its hubs at Kansas City and Orlando. Mounting financial losses led to Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 1989.
Scheduled flights ended on November 6, 1989, with limited charters continuing until the airline shut down entirely on December 31.
