Founded as air taxi aerial survey and sight seeing flights operator by J. Martin Schroeder. In 1966 name was changed to Martinair Holland. KLM purchased 25% stake in the airline. In 1967 first transatlantic leisure charter flights were conducted with Douglas DC-7 and DC-8s acquired from KLM. In November 1973 first wide body, a Douglas DC-10 joined the fleet. Since 1991, Martinair offers cargo only flights worldwide. Airline ceased short-haul operations in 2007 and concentrates on long-haul cargo and charter flights. Martinair also operates some of its flights on scheduled basis. Martinair also include subsidiary Martinair Vliegschool which provides flight training, sightseeing and survey services. KLM purchased remaining outstanding shares in December 2008 and has effectively become sole owner of Martinair. Martinair now operates KLM's fleet of 4 B747-406ER/F's on KLM Cargos behalf. All passenger flights ceased 31 Oct 2011, making Martinair now a purely cargo airline.
