Full service airline founded by Frank Lorenzo of Texas Air which was holding company of Texas International Airlines and Continental Air Lines. Airline commenced service in December 1980 despite vigorous oposition from established airlines and Airline Pilots Association. Airline was competing with hourly shuttle service of Eastern between New York, Washington National and Boston Logan airports. New York Air also provided multiple daily connections throughout eastern seaboard Florida, and as far west as Detroit, Cleveland, Knoxville and New Orleans. Airline faced difficult start because of economic recession of early 1980s but eventually became profitable as economy improved. In 1986 Texas Air decided to merge New York Air operations with that of Continental Air Lines.
