Reading Aviation Service began operations in 1957 operating between Reading and Newark. Its name changed to Reading Airline System in the 1960s and it added service at Allentown, Philadelphia, and eventually Buffalo. In 1968 it changed its name to Suburban Airlines and eventually added additional points in Pennsylvania as well as Washington DC.in 1968. In 1973 it began operating as an Allegheny Commuter carrier on its Newark and Philadelphia routes, while Buffalo and Washington continued to operate as Suburban Airlines; the independent Suburban operation ended by 1980. In 1986, the airline was acquired by USAir's parent. In August 1989, its trade name was changed to Allegheny Commuter Airlines. On July 1, 1992, it merged into Pennsylvania Commuter Airlines, which operated USAir Express services from Harrisburg.
