Transportes Aereos de Centroamericano was founded by New Zealand pilot in Canadian Air Force - Lowell Yerex in Honduras. TACA Corporation, which was headquartered in U.S.A. eventually owned number of Central America airlines but TACA International was only one to survive. Today, TACA is part of alliance of 5 central American airlines - LACSA, Aviateca, NICA, TACA International and TACA Honduras forms Grupo TACA. Five flying macawas on the tails of their planes represent this union. TACA, In 1961 Salvadorian businessman Ricardo Kriete bought majority interest, effectively making TACA a Salvadorian company. In 1983 company maintenance, reservation and administration headquarters were moved from New Orelans to San Salvador. Today, Grupo TACA operates Pan American network with hubs in San Salvador, San Jose and Lima connecting major cities from Toronto to Santiago de Chile. Kriete family controlled as little as 20% of business by 1980, but today it is sole owner and Roberto Kriete (grandson of Ricardo Kriete and private pilot) is its CEO. Roberto Kriete is also a stake holder and co-founder of Mexico's low cost start-up Volaris. In 2009, Grupo TACA acquired Colombia's flag carrier Avianca. Airline's will retain their respective AOC but plan is to unite them under one brand. In July 2012, both TACA and Avianca became member of Star Alliance.
