Alitalia can trace its history to Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali that was formed by Italy's government with the help of BEA which held initially 40% stake in the new airline. Italian government holds majority to this day. Alitalia begun domestic flights with Italiane made Fiat G12s and Savoia Marchetti S.M.95s followed immediately by International services to Tripoli, Cairo and Lisbon which were served with Avro Lancasters and London (Northolt 4/47) with S.M. 95s. In 1957 when AII merged with Linee Aeree Italiane. In 1961 BEA sold its interest in the airline. Airline entered jet age in April 1960 when first DC-8 was delivered followed next day with delivery of first Caravelle. Next month, Alitalia put to service its first Caravelle on London route. In 1969 Alitalia introduced its iconic brand - stylized letter "A" in colors of national flag. In May 1970, Alitalia took delivery of its first wide-body, a Boeing 747-143. Alitalia also operated Boeing 727s which were gradually replaced since 1984 with Douglas DC-9-80s, which have are being replaced with A320 family aircraft since March 2009 . Boeing 767s and 777s are used on long haul flights to North and South Americas, Far East and Australia. Alitalia is a member of Skyteam Airline Alliance. In January 2009, financially struggling carrier, merged with low-cost competitor Air One. Alitalia serves dense domestic network of 26 destinations. Extensive network covering European destinations from Rome, Milan and Naples. In addition, its intercontinental network include Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, New York, Toronto and Miami in North America. Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Caracas and Buenos Aires in South America. Tokyo and Osaka are served in Asia and Accra and Lagos in Africa. In June 2010 Alitalia received its first Airbus A330 long range airliner which will replace Boeing 767. The same year in April, Alitalia decided to keep the Air One brand as its low cost subsidiary and transferred some of the aircraft that were part of its merger with the original Air One back to its fleet. Alitalia operated its finals services on 14th October 2021 and was replaced as the state-owned carrier by ITA Airways the next day.
